The American Seeding Machine Company based in Springfield, Ohio, USA was a manufacturer of seed drills & planting machinery. The company was one of the firms that merged in 1929 with the Oliver Chilled Plow Company, the Nichols and Shepard Company, and the Hart-Parr Tractor Company to form the Oliver Corporation and offer a full line of tractors & machinery in the face of growing competition from full-line companies such as J.I. Case, John Deere and Massey-Harris.
Company history[]
The company was founded in 1903 when seven different implement manufacturers merged together. They manufactured grain drills, corn planters and the like. The lead company (strongest) was the Superior Drill Company of Springfield, Ohio, thus the new company was based in Springfield at the Superior facilities. The other merging companies included P.P. Mast and Company (est. 1856), Hoosier Drill Company (est. 1857 in Richmond, Indiana), the Empire Drill Company, and Bickford & Huffman.[1]
The Superior name continued into the Oliver years as the Oliver Superior line of grain drills and related equipment.
