The Bean Toolcarrier or Row-crop tractor was designed by a Mr. Bean (not Rowan Atkinson's character) in the 1940's for use in market gardens on inter row cultivation work. The machine was built by several firms over its life.

The Bean toolcarrier or Row-crop tractor was manufactured by the Blackburn Aircraft works initialy. In 1945 production transferred to Humberside Agricultural Products at Brough. nr Goole. Latter production was by Thomas Green & Sons of Leeds (better known for mowers and Rollers).

The MK I had a industrial 8 hp Ford engine of the side valve design, with a 3F - 1 R gearbox and a Ford axle, with a single front wheel steered by a tiller. A 4 wheeled version was added in 1948 still with the tiller steering (see photos of the two variants)

The 3-wheeler cost £340 in the 1950's and the 4 wheeler £360.[1]

A number of different tools fitted inside the frame designed for horticultural use.

PreservationEdit

There are a few in preservation as they are simple, can be used and different.

They can often be found at Horticultural sections of the Vintage shows or in the working are at places like Great Dorset Steam Fair.
