Wikia changes editor format

Wikia in there wisdom as the host of Tractor Wiki have again been fiddling with the sites layout and have updated the Editor layout and functionality.

All feedback (Complaints) should be addressed to Wikia Staff at Wikia central.

When will they learn that "If its not broke dont fix it" as they allways break it in the precess of so call improving the 'ease of use and customer experience' as the marketing 'experts' roll out the hype for each new 'improved version'

Looks like popup windows are the way forward !

The bigger editing space is better, but moving usefull tools and stuff onto popups is not & preiewing in a small box looks rubbish to me.

Surface treatment of Piston

Re: the difference between the bright piston and the dark piston

Back your questions in details:

“Per TY290X piston, you have two types’ pistons; one is dark color and the other in bright color like stainless steel. So which is better and what’s the difference.

1. Three ways of piston surface treatment.

There are three ways:

a) Tin plating

b) Spray-plating with lead at piston skirt part.

c) Anodizing Aluminum process

Today, most of the piston adopts the lead spray-plating. It can strengthen the hardness and make the piston stronger than the pistons treated by the other two ways.

2. Spray-plating with lead at piston skirt part.

Before the spray plating, the piston can be treated by two ways:

a) Phosphating, piston plated in the ac…

Progress - Tractor Wiki passes 7000 Articles

After a lot of work by User:Scoty6776 we have passed the 7000 article point. A lot of back ground/ definition of terminology articles to fill in red links in the main articles have been ported from wikipedia. Also a number of vehicle brand and model articles are also being imported to build on to form a database of vehicles in preservation within them.

A number of missing smaller steam engine builders and custom built engines have been added. The current season of steam rallies has provided some new engines to add the the preservation lists and several events now need lists of the exhibits adding for the 2011 season show.

Random IP users still assume the summary box magically adds the stuff they type in it to article page even when nothing …

Wanted templates clean up - Feburary

After a intensive few days of copying and pasting templates from wikipedia to fix some of the missing or broken templates the wanted list is hovering around the 600 mark. A number of extra ones were needed to work with categories as the categorisation has also been looked at to sort out the structure with t5he templates side of it.

A number of older edit notice templates still require updating to categorise pages in a "Category:Tractor wiki articles needing xyz" rather than "Category:Wikipedia articles needing xyz". I've also taken the oppertunity to implement the use of monthly categories for the clean up templates (as used on wikipedia) now rather than having to comeback later and change even more later. This means less cleaning up of imp…

Spring clean up

Following the clearup of a number of wanted Categories by user Scoty6776 I'ved started a cleanup of wanted Templates. Following a look at the vast number of wanted template sub templates and reviewing ways of removing some of the more 'esoteric' ones from the lists of templates in view of the (very) complex and interconected nature of these it was decided it was easier just to copy the rest from wikipedia to 'complete' the set. So after several Hundred templates and sub templates the wanted template list finally dropped below the magic 1000 mark for the first time in 2 years.

A lot of wanted formating and editing templates are just wanted redirects from alternative titles to some of the article management and citation templates from wikipe…

Changes to all Wikia sites

Wikia have in their wisdom decided to introduce a new Skin (look) and withdraw some of the powers that admins have to control the design of each individual wiki. This include withdrawing from November the current look. The 'New Wikia' look gives a much reduced article space, drops the left side navigation links and introduces a wider block on the right for adverts and various features based on some the 'new look' hubs were recent activity is displayed, latest picture posts, blogs and Internal wiki adverts appear covering about 1/3 of a new fixed width layout.

I personally think it is a very retrograde step and do not like the new layout or the moves by wikia to introduce social networking with links to face book etc. The loss of functional…

We pass the 4100 article point.

Tractor Wiki storms past the 4100 article mark with over 200 new articles in the past week. Global coverage increases with article on tractors built in India and Japan as well as Museums in Australia, with a large collection of machinery some of which is very rare. - Dardanup Heritage Park, Western Australia.

Dont forget to add photos from any shows you visit as well as any machines you see that we have not listed yet. Even if we have it list you can add more photos now with Wikias improved Gallery feature allowing better upload and display of your photos by adding a gallery to any page. How about creating a slide show of your photos from events as added on the Masham Steam Engine and Fair Organ Rally page by a new editor recently.

Steam miniatures

Some of the show reports now include a section for photos of the many steam miniatures that are a growing section at Steam Rallies. These working steam engines vary from a compact 3" scale (1/4 size) up the 9" scale (3/4 full size) models.

The larger models are being marketed by several builders as complete ready to rally engines at price a lot cheaper than doing up an old derelict engine (if you can find one) and a lot more transportable.

3800 + Articles

Growth in coverage continues as we pass the 3800 article point with a series of articles on Landini models from Scoty6776.

3500 Articles now on Tractor Wiki

With the addition of International TD-24 by User:Edrob we reach the milestone of 3500 articles.

Also helping us reach this new total was User:Scoty6776 with a series of articles on Middle Eastern and Indian makes and models often based on designs by Massey Ferguson and Goldoni built under license for local markets.

John Deere Tractors

Restored John Deere Tractors now have an accurate steering wheel that takes it back to the original design

For enthusiasts endeavoring to restore antique tractors to their brand new condition, the word close really only counts out in the field, in the horseshoe pit. Restoration enthusiasts insist that their replacement components all be dead ringers. These owners feel privileged to return their tractor to the original beauty it had years ago, when grandpa first drove it out of the barn. There's no better example of a restoration quality part than the JDS539 John Deere Steering Wheel, manufactured by Steiner Tractor Parts. To look at a new JDS539 alongside an original component, an enthusiast might have a hard time telling which one was rec…

request for help in research on tractor use

My name is Robin Elliott, I am studying at the University of Utah, and I am doing some research about tractors. I am specifically interested in safely mounting and dismounting from tractors - admittedly this does not get the same attention as rollovers, PTO accidents, and so forth, but according to some statistics, it is a significant concern. To help provide the information I need I am working on a survey to gather data about getting on and off a tractor. The survey is being developed on FileMaker Pro (registered or copywrited name I believe) format but will be available to be taken online on the internet by next month. Note: to take the survey participants must have experience driving tractors and be 18 years old or older. Please write a…
