The Caterpillar 943 crawler loader was introduced in 1980 and was assembled by caterpillar inc. in the USA and France.

Features Edit

The 943 has a Caterpillar D3204 direct injection, four-cylinder engine producing 80 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It has a hydrostatic transmission. It comes standard with a rollover protection system (ROPS) cab, electronic monitoring system (EMS), sealed and lubricated track (SALT), oscillating undercarriage, Z-bar linkage, and a 14.2-inch (36-cm) track shoe size.

The 943 was manufactured at two Caterpillar facilites;

• in the USA, with a 04Z or 31Y serial number prefix
• in France, with a 03Y or 19Z prefix.

The 19Z and 04Z are Low Ground Pressure (LGP) units with a 67-inch (170-cm) track gauge.

Modifications Edit

In 1983 Caterpillar increased the digging depth, beginning with 03Y01345, 19Z00236, 04Z00307, and 31Y01334. A new scroll fuel system was added, beginning with 03Y01386 and 19Z00253.

In 1984 Cat changed the loader frame, and added a new brake control system and dual setting relief valve, beginning with 04Z00364 and 31Y01339. At the same time the 31Y unit received an attachment idler guard.

Production ended in the USA in 1985.

In 1985 the undercarriage was modified, beginning with 03Y01594 and 19Z00341.

In 1987 Cat added a horizontal hydrostatic filler base, beginning with 03Y01806 and 19Z00399.

Production of 03Y ended in 1987.

In 1989 the track roller frame was changed and the equalizer bar was shortened, beginning with 19Z01459.

In 1990 Cat added a general-purpose bucket with fabricated hinges and a vertical face on the back, beginning with 19Z01580.

Production ended in France in 1992.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 5,900 Caterpillar 943 crawler loaders have been produced.
