The Cooley Tractor Challenge was held in Ireland in 2007 to break the World Record for the most vintage Tractors working at one time. Several versions of the record have been set around the world over the past few years. But the Irish set out to smash the record after several rather vague definitions had been used by others to break there earlier record. The use of modern tractors was not considered in the spirit of the original record attempts.
The principle organiser of the event was the late John Hanlon from near Dundalk, in the Irish Republic.
History of the Event[]
add more detailed history here
The challenges started in 1999 with the Sandstone Estates in South Africa arranging the Great 100 event which achieved 109 Vintage tractors working and set a Guinness World Record.
This was followed by the Farm Machinery Club of Australia getting 298 working in 2001 at Yass.
The South Africans then organised a Great 400 to win back the record. The British started planing a Great 500 , but were beaten by the South Africans getting 7555 in April 2002.
John Hanlon organised a Great 800 in 2002 and then achieved 1883 Vintage tractors working to gain the World record back to Ireland. So the British attempted 2003 for 2003 but failed only achieving 771 at Hullavington.
The Australians claimed a new record later with 2000+ tractors but that included modern machinery which was not included in he original records criteria.
