Not to be confused with the "American" use of Elevator to describe a Lift (people elevator)

The term Elevator is used to describe a number of related items of farm machinery used for material handling purposes.

Material handling belts and belt elevators[]

A different kind of elevator is used to transport material. It generally consists of an inclined plane on which a conveyor belt runs. The conveyor often includes tall ribs to prevent the material from sliding backwards. These elevators are often used in industrial and agricultural applications. When such mechanisms (or spiral screws or pneumatic transport) are used to elevate grain for storage in large vertical silos, the entire structure is called a grain elevator.

There have occasionally been lift belts for humans; these typically have steps about every seven feet along the length of the belt, which moves vertically, so that the passenger can stand on one step and hold on to the one above.

Applications[]

  • Grain
  • Root crops (potatoes, beet, carrots, etc)
  • Soil
  • Stones

Bale Elevator[]

These are usually of a slated design with chains linking the slats to form a continuous belt, with projecting lugs or 'L' shaped slats for friction to carry the bales up a steeper elevations. The Elevator being adjusted in angle to suit the hifht of the stack and present the bales to the operative stacking them at an easy to grab height. they are usually driven by a small single-cylinder petrol engine or an electric motor.
