The Caterpillar 943 crawler loader built by Caterpillar Inc. was introduced in 1980 in the USA and France.
Specification[]
The Caterpillar 943 has a four-cylinder Caterpillar 3204 engine (direct injection) producing 80 hp (60 kW) (FWHP).
It has a hydrostatic transmission.
It comes standard with a rollover protection system (ROPS) cab, electronic monitoring system (EMS), sealed and lubricated track (SALT), oscillating undercarriage, Z-bar linkage, and a 14.2-inch (36-cm) track shoe width.
The Low Ground Pressure (LGP) units (19Z and 04Z) are fitted with a 67-inch (170-cm) track gauge.
The 943 was manufactured the following serial number prefixs;
- In the USA, with a 04Z or 31Y
- In France, with a 03Y or 19Z prefix.
Production of the 04Z and 31Y ended in the USA in 1985.
Production of 03Y ended in France in 1987.
Production of 19Z ended in France in 1992.

In 1983 Caterpillar increased the digging depth, beginning with 03Y01345, 19Z00236, 04Z00307, and 31Y01334.
A new scroll fuel system was added, beginning with 03Y01386 and 19Z00253.
In 1984 Cat changed the loader frame, and added a new brake control system and dual setting relief valve, beginning with 04Z00364 and 31Y01339. At the same time the 31Y unit received an attachment idler guard.
In 1985 the undercarriage was modified, beginning with 03Y01594 and 19Z00341.
In 1987 Cat added a horizontal hydrostatic filler base, beginning with 03Y01806 and 19Z00399.
In 1989 the track roller frame was changed and the equalizer bar was shortened, beginning with 19Z01459.
In 1990 Cat added a general-purpose bucket with fabricated hinges and a vertical face on the back, beginning with 19Z01580.
Serial number data[]
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 5,900 Caterpillar 943 crawler loaders have been produced.
