L&T-John Deere Private Limited (LTJD) was set up in 1997, and began production in 2000, as a 50-50 joint venture between Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) and Deere & Co. to manufacture tractors in Sanaswadi, Pune, Maharashtra, India.[1] The tractors were John Deere design and colors, and bore the L&T-John Deere brand name.

Production started at about 10,000 tractors during the plants first year, with plans to be at 30,000 within a couple of years. Over 50% of the tractors are exported.[2]

In 2005, Larsen & Tourbro decided to exit the tractor business and sold their shares to John Deere. The tractors were renamed to simply be John Deere. LTJD was the largest exporter of tractors from India, and exported to USA, Europe and several East Asian countries under the John Deere name.[3]
