Shibaura is the brand name used by IHI Shibaura Machinery Corp (ISM), formerly Ishikawajima Shibaura Machinery Co, of Tokyo, Japan. It was formed in 1950 by Toshiba Corp (Tokyo-Shibaura-Engineering) and IHI (Ishikawajima Harima Industries). Shibaura manufactures tractors, lawn care (turf) equipment, generators and small engines. They formerly manufactured various outdoor power equipment such as blowers, trimmers, brush cutters, etc... After 30 years in the outdoor power equipment business, Shibaura discontinued in 2008.[1] Some of Shibaura's turf care products, such as the front-mount zero turn mowers, have been sold in the USA as the Hustler brand, a brand of Excel Industries of Hesston, Kansas.[2] They have long supplied Ford and later New Holland with lawn care and compact/utility tractors.

History[]

In 1961, Ishikawajima Shibaura Machinery Co began building tractors under the Ishikawajima brand, which was later changed to Ishikawajima-Harima, and finally to Shibaura. Also in 1961, they began a tie up with MWM for engine designs. In 1972, Shibaura signed a long term supply agreement with Ford Tractors (now CNH Global) to supply compact and utility tractors, which continued on to build for New Holland and Case IH in later years.

In 1990, an agreement was signed for a supply/design agreement with Yanmar, and in 1993-Yanmar and Shibaura created a tie-up for tractors, the first of which was the AF-series. The corporate name was changed in 2007 to IHI Shibaura Machinery Corp from Ishikawajima Shibaura Machinery Co.

A joint venture in China was founded in 2008 with Perkins, Perkins Shibaura Engines (Wuxi) Company Limited (PSEW).[3] In 2011, Ishikawajima Shibaura Machinery Changsyu Co., Ltd. was established in China, and in 2015 it was announced that a new Chinese unit would be established to build tractors and harvesters.

Some sources indicate the Yanmar owns a percentage of Shibaura, but documentation has not been located. In Australia, Shibaura is marketed by Case IH.

Shibaura has a tractor plant in The Netherlands where tractors for Europe and North America are built. Many of the Japanese models seem to be supplied by Yanmar, as Shiabaura's Japanese website directs to Yanmar.

In Turkey, Shibaura licensed Is Bora to build tractors for sale in the 1970s.
