Ford New Holland was formed when Dearborn, Michigan, USA-based Ford Tractors purchased New Holland from the Sperry-New Holland corporation in 1986. The merger brought together Ford's tractor, construction equipment and implements with New Holland's combine harvester, skid-steer loader and hay equipment.

In 1991, Ford sold off the agriculture and construction equipment business to Fiat of Italy, with the stipulation that the Ford name had to be phased out by 2000. The company name was changed to New Holland.
