The hydraulic hammer, also known as rock breaker and hydraulic chisel, is a type of hydraulic tool or attachment that is used in demolition jobs which involve breaking up of large blocks and slabs of concrete and in excavation and quarrying of rocks and minerals.
Types[]
These rang in size from small handheld tool used with a portable power pack or off a external hydraulic service from a machine or truck in-place of a pneumatic hammer, up to machine mounted examples weighing 10 ton plus that are fitted to mining excavators used in quarrying or on large scale demolition of structures such as large foundations, bridges and other redundant concrete structures.
Some of these tools are fitted on arms fitted to the feed hoppers of Crusher plants to break up any oversize rocks that have been missed at the quarry face or on demolition crushers to clear blockages. Normal practice is for the excavator or wheeled loader drivers to put oversize material to one side as it can damage truck bodies and jam the crusher. The oversize material is then broken up by a large hammer equipped machine at intervals and then sent to the crusher. This operation is often performed at intervals by external contractors or when normal production is shut down for maintenance.
